7 minutes reading time Brazil
Hello, my name is Renata and it is with pleasure that I present to you one of the most beautiful cities in Brazil, Florianópolis or Floripa for the intimates. Florianópolis is the capital of Santa Catarina State, located in southerner Brazil. It’s a half-island, half-continent city with 54 km of longitude and a population of just over 500,000. So today I’m going to tell you about the last time I visited this wonderful city.
Stay at a central Airbnb house
My friends and I preferred to stay at a central Airbnb house because the island is very large and the beaches are relatively far from each other, therefore we could choose each day a different beach to visit. We stayed at a great Airbnb house in the Trindade neighborhood, near drugstores, groceries stores, and markets. We paid R$400 a day for the house that had two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a bunk bed, so it was a house that could fit four people in total, all rooms with clean bedding and in airy places in the house. At the Airbnb there was also a bathroom and a kitchen along with a living room, that is, if you are traveling on a shorter budget it is possible to cook and dine right there, without having to spend money on restaurants.
Famous beach Joaquina beach
The first beach we visited was the one I consider the most famous of all, Joaquina beach, which is to the east of the island. Joaquina is fifteen km from the center of Florianópolis and is easily accessible, but it suffers from terrible traffic during the season, which occurs with most beaches. It is a very popular beach for surfers and has already hosted some world surfing championships, in addition, Joaquina is surrounded by dunes that make it the owner of two seas, one with saltwater and one with sand, and it is worth remembering that in the dunes it is possible to practice sandboarding, one of the most popular extreme sports on the island.
Lagoa da Conceição
In the same district, on the way to the beach mentioned above, we find Lagoa da Conceição. It is a lagoon located in the middle of the city with an extension of twenty square kilometers with mountains around, providing us with a breathtaking view. The paved part of the lagoon is made up of modern houses, bars, and restaurants, making it a great option for walking, but for those looking for more excitement than a quiet walk, the lagoon also has a free flight that has a height of 225 meters. There is also a part facing the commercial area, where tourists can find several shops, stalls with jewelry, and bathing suits. Therefore, the Lagoa da Conceição is the ideal place for you who travel as a family, since the lake does not have waves and preserves shallow areas suitable for children.
Praia do Campeche and Barra da Lagoa
On our second day of the trip, we visited two different places, in the morning we went to Praia do Campeche which is in the south of the island, and in the afternoon we went to the natural pools of Barra da Lagoa. One of the main attractions of Praia do Campeche is the small island of the same name located about 2 km from the beach, where it is possible to find archaeological sites with cave paintings, nature trails, and also underwater trails. And if you’re lucky, going in the right season, you can even see the whales jump, which even from afar make a spectacle of themselves.
Barra da Lagoa
And speaking of natural spectacles, the natural pools of Barra da Lagoa also deserve to be called paradise. Located on the beach of the same name, Barra da Lagoa, the natural pools are a 15-minute walk from the beach, and it is actually a slit on the coast of the beach that on calm tide days the water becomes crystal clear and standing, becoming a natural pool. I definitely recommend both destinations, as they are perfect and worth visiting, but if you are traveling with children and want to visit the natural pools, it is worth being extra careful, because it is only surrounded by rocks and has no sand and crevices are very deep.
Praia da Solidão
And finally, on our third and last day of the trip, we met my favorite destination so far, the Praia da Solidão. Of all the places that we know and that I presented to you above, this one was the farthest of all, located at the southern end of the island, an average of 30 km from the city center. Remembering Praia da Solidão brings me a feeling of nostalgia of taking a drive on a sunny day away from everything, it is surrounded by green mountains and old houses in a simple neighborhood, with a short stretch of beach, white sand, and a rough sea, it’s one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen.
Cachoeira da Solidão
But what really surprised me about the place was a waterfall located on the side of the beach called Cachoeira da Solidão. To get to it is very simple and well signposted, you need to enter a trail inside one of the mountains, the trail lasts a maximum of 15 minutes, arriving there you come across a waterfall and a small stream with clear, transparent water. Get ready to take lots of photos and videos, as the place deserves to be remembered. Also, because it’s a waterfall, the water is pretty cold, but don’t miss the chance to swim.
There is always more…
Anyway, these were just a few places that I had the opportunity to visit around the magical island, being huge there are still many other beaches and attractions that are the reasons why the island is one of the most sought-after places by Brazilians, many of them unknown even to us. In other words, Florianópolis officially has 42 beaches, some people even say that has more than 50, so there are places on the island that not even those who live there get to know.
Here in Brazil, we have an urban legend that circulates in southern Brazil is that the island of magic “chooses people” so not everyone who goes there likes the place. Some people say that they visited the place and didn’t feel well, that they found everything very far away and with a strange energy, these are certain people that the island did not welcome. But if your case is the opposite if the island chooses you and you like the place, you will never want to leave, I even thought about changing jobs and going to live there a few times. Nothing beats the feeling of crossing the bridge that connects Floripa on the mainland and Floripa on the island, the feeling is unique.
The south of Brazil, mainly the state of Santa Catarina, has many other beach towns as beautiful as this one and that are close to each other, so if you come to know the one you will have the opportunity to know several others. In conclusion, I hope to have aroused your curiosity about our Florianópolis and shown why this coast should be on your travel list. But what do you think, would the island welcome you and choose you?
