Tonga offers special resorts that have packages with diving included. This can be very useful if you are not very fond of surprises. In this case, visit your local travel agency and they will help you to pick or create the best tour package.

If you are a more independent tourist, here is some information for you:

  • The best time to go. The tourist season in Tonga begins in July and ends in November. Depending on what local lures you want to see, we recommend you to contact your accommodation of choice to learn when is the best time for visiting.
  • Weather conditions. The weather in Tonga is very stable and varies from 69F to 100F from season to season. Even in “winter”, the ocean is warm and delightful, so you will be pleased whenever you travel there.
  • How much money do you need? There are many free places where you can do diving in Tonga island — most of the islands are inhabited, so if you are an experienced diver, you can explore the underwater world by yourself. If you are a newbie you can order a tour with guidance or a class in the school of diving to get your license. Cost may vary from $100 to $1000 dollars.
  • Visibility. As we mentioned earlier, there is no bad time to visit Tonga for snorkeling or diving, but in the dry season, water is so clear that you can see 100 meters ahead.

  • Hunga Magic in Vava’u. In Hunga Magic you can watch magnificent humpback whales in their natural habitat. It is truly an unbelievable experience because those grand creatures can be seen within arm`s reach. Even if you are not lucky enough to see whales, there is an astonishing and very bright coral that will compensate you for that.
  • Outer Reef, Tongatapu. Cute parrotfish, graceful butterflyfish, and scary barracudas can be found in this diving place. There are caves, canyons, and other underwater wonders, that is exciting for every new or experienced diver.
  • Clan McWilliam, Vava’u. An old sunken ship Clan McWilliam became a home for the plethora of fish and sea creatures. It one of a kind adventure to dive among the remains with all the underwater beings and feel the true power of nature`s forces.
  • Swallows Cave, Vava’u. Extremely popular snorkeling site in Tonga, this cave deserved its name by being an ultimate spot for all passionate snorkelers. In this cave, you will find amazing spirals of fish. Those fish are so colorful, vivid, and very friendly — you will be like a mermaid or a Sea Queen there!
  • Coral Gardens, Vava’u. Endless fields of colorful corals in the Coral Garden looks just like a picture from a children`s book. Careful and patient snorkeling will open you amazing secrets od this place.
  • Mariner’s Cave, Vava’u. A mystical underwater cave that has an unusual, yet amazing foggy atmosphere that immerses you into unearthly feel. There are no fish or other aquatic creatures in the cave, but we can assure you, that is enough magic there to take your breath away.
  • Kanokupolu Beach, Tongatapu. This beach is good for a number of activities — you can dive, snorkel, and surf there. The seabed in Kanokupolu Beach is rich with aquatic creatures and flora and it can be a great relaxed place for snorkeling.
  • Arch of Ofalanga, Ha’apai. This is the place, that is the best suitable for experienced divers. You can dive very deep there — about 25-30 meters. This underwater wonder was formed very long ago — in the last Ice Age. It is a beautiful and one of a kind place for divers.
